The Five Spices Mix is ??a combination of the following powdered spices: cinnamon, fennel, star anise, ginger and cloves. Gives a strong lemon and ginger flavour with a fragrant aroma. A spicy flavour with a touch of softness similar to anise seed.
The five spice blend is thought to have emerged when the ancient Chinese people tried to produce a “wonder powder”. The blend is traditionally based on the Chinese philosophy of balancing yin and yang in food and combines the five primary flavours associated to Chinese cuisine: sweet, sour, spicy, bitter and salty.
It is very common in Chinese restaurants and also serves as seasoning, such as salt and pepper. Adding a little salt, the five spice mixture makes an excellent meat seasoning.
Star anise, cinnamon (cassia), fennel, cloves, ginger.
Store in a dark, cool and dry place.
Ideal for braised and roasted meat dishes. Use sprinkled over fatty meats like pork and duck, or over fried vegetables. Add in marinades for meat and seafood.
