Product Description
Assam tea grows in north-east India in the valley of the ferocious Brahmaputra river. The soil is incredibly fertile, rich with nutrients that allow the tea leaves to develop a powerful, malty flavour that no other origin can match.
Assam’s famous tea leaves are harvested twice a year. The second harvest, known as the second flush, is generally considered the best and delivers more of that prized full-bodied flavour. It makes a classic, strong brew that tastes lovely with a full English breakfast.
Loose leaf tea adds an extra sense of occasion. Using “orthodox” tea leaves – a larger leaf than those typically used in tea bags – means a slightly lighter flavour which some consider more refined. These Assam leaves also boast a uniquely beautiful golden tip, which is known as a mark of quality. They’re ideally brewed in a teapot, which gives them lots of room to move around and benefit from lots of surface contact with the water, and adds a certain something to the ritual of tea-making.
We work very closely with Assam producers to secure the very best second flush quality each year. We’ve visited every estate we buy from and we give them tasting feedback on every single lot we buy, to help them get even better year on year. This way of trading isn’t unique to Assam – close, respectful, face-to-face relationships are the heart of our business, wherever we are in the world – but with such international demand for Assam tea, we’re especially proud to have such strong supplier relationships, some of which date back over 30 years.
