Product Description
The scientific name for chili peppers, or Peperoncinno, is *Capsicum*, a genus of plants in the Solanaceae family, native to the Americas but currently cultivated worldwide. It includes various species of peppers and chilies, both ornamental and sweet. It presents as a small shrub with fruits called bell peppers or chilies. The fruit color varies from green to red, passing through yellow and orange. It is a plant that requires a lot of water; insufficient irrigation results in a strong, spicy flavor.
The etymology of the Latin name *Capsicum* probably comes from *capsa*, meaning box, and owes its name to the particular shape of the fruit, a berry, which resembles a box containing seeds. Others, however, believe it derives from the Greek word *kapto*, meaning to bite, clearly referring to the spiciness that “bites” the tongue when consumed.
Chili peppers have been used as food since antiquity. Archaeological evidence suggests that chili peppers were cultivated in Mexico as early as 5500 BC and were the only spice used by the indigenous people of Peru and Mexico. The chili pepper arrived in Europe introduced by Portuguese and Spanish navigators, becoming an immediate success due to its excellent adaptation to the Old Continent, spreading to southern regions, Africa, and Asia.
Chili peppers can be consumed fresh, dried, smoked, cooked, or raw; they are also preserved in olive oil, vinegar, with tomatoes, and made into jam. One of the most popular recipes is peperoncino cream for seasoning bruschetta, appetizers, sauces, and pasta dishes, while a true classic of Italian cuisine is pasta with garlic, olive oil, and peperoncino.
Chili peppers have antioxidant properties and help combat damage caused by aging cells and tissues. They contain numerous vitamins and minerals that stimulate the production of gastric juices and aid digestion. In addition, capsaicin improves blood circulation, relieving pain and inflammation.
